Built in 1901, the Land Administration building is located at 142 William Street.
Designed by architect Thomas Pye, the imposing four-storey sandstone structure was commissioned during an era of post-federation economic recovery to showcase the state’s wealth and natural resources. It was built almost entirely of local materials, featuring Mount Crosby and Enoggera granite at its base, Helidon freestone facing, and interior woodwork crafted from native cedar, silky oak, and black bean. Over the decades, it accommodated the offices of the Premier, the Executive Council, and the Lands Department, while its top floor even served as the home of the Queensland National Art Gallery from 1905 to 1930.
