Sheila – Justene Williams

Queen's Wharf Plaza

Sheila – A larger-than-life five tonne goddess-like bronze sculpture. Known for her focus on the body as an art form, Brisbane based creative Justene Williams, says her five-year-old daughter Honore’s fascination with tiny toy figurines, inspired the almost five metre upscaled version of a superwoman, titled Sheila. Justene’s daughter is interested in superheroes and loves her plastic figurines, so Justene took that and gave the sculpture gravitas.

The name Sheila riffs on the term used for an Aussie woman but it is also the female character carved in stone mainly in Europe from the 11th century, which has interpretations of protector, fertility and empathy and Justene wanted to immortalise those qualities.

The Artist

Justene Williams is well-known for large performances, video installations, photographs and more recently figurative sculptures that are roughly hewn from foam and fibreglass constructed in combination with readymade objects.

Drawing from personal narrative, rituals and mythology, channelling spirits of art history, transforming the prosaic through action, energy and emotion. Williams attempts to conjure invisible forces between corporeal and intangible worlds. Celebrating the avant-garde dream of the ‘total artwork,’ while deconstructing and communicating with a 21st century body —domesticating and situating it in the reality and absurdity of now. Williams work offers an inquiry into decommissioned objects, histories, and beliefs.

She participated in the 20th Sydney Biennale, 2010 & 2004 Adelaide Biennial of Art and represented Australia in The Performa 15 Biennale – Australian Pavilions Without Walls New York. Other highlights include Know My Name, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; The Curtain Breathed Deeply, Artspace Sydney: Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Her work is held in collections such as Tate UK, Museum of Contemporary Art, Monash University Museum of Art Melbourne, Toi o Tāmaki Auckland, National Gallery of Australia Canberra. Justene Williams is a Senior Lecturer at Queensland College of Art & Design Brisbane.
