Olympics glory for Brisbane

Destination Brisbane Consortium, developers of Queen’s Wharf Brisbane, congratulate the Queensland Government, the Australian Olympic Committee, and all others involved in securing the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The consortium, lead by The Star Entertainment Group and including Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium, has already invested heavily in the State’s tourism with more than $5 billion of developments under construction or in planning.

Chairman John O’Neill AO said the International Olympic Committee’s endorsement of Queensland marks a significant date in the State’s history, with Brisbane only the third Australian city to be accorded the honour of hosting the Games behind Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

“Congratulations to the Premier Palaszczuk, the Queensland Government, and the Australian Olympic Committee, so wonderfully led by John Coates, for delivering the Sunshine State the world’s most watched and treasured event,” he said.

“Kudos must also go to the Council of Mayors South-East Queensland and to the Prime Minister and the Federal Government for their important contributions.”

Mr O’Neill was part of the delegation that travelled to the IOC headquarters in Switzerland in 2019 to officially present Queensland’s candidature to host the 2032 Games.

He said Queensland’s winning bid presents a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“There is a 10-year Green and Gold runway in front of us, then a 10-year legacy to follow,” he added.

“Sport with be supercharged, critical transport and community infrastructure can be fast tracked, and the growth potential for tourism and jobs is substantial, which will be critical to the recovery from COVID-19.”

Mr O’Neill said the eyes of the world will be focused on Queensland once the curtain falls on the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“By that time, all of the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development will be complete and driving substantial increased visitation to the State.”

Set to open from 2022, Queen’s Wharf Brisbane integrated resort development will create thousands of jobs and be at the forefront of a golden decade of transformative development for Queensland.

“As the state’s largest and most vibrant waterfront project, Queen’s Wharf Brisbane will be a landmark for the river city and the state.” Mr O’Neill said.
