Creating an over street entertainment precinct

Four years since William Street was closed to the public to make way for the exciting Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development, the road has since been reinstated with the integrated resort’s podium levels now connecting 12-metres above William Street, from George Street to Queens Wharf Road.

Since early June, the podium structure either side of William Street has been connected by 70 tonnes of prefabricated steel.

Each podium level will cover a floor space of 16,500m2, with a combined total of 66,000m2 over the four levels.

Meanwhile, cutting through four of the podium levels, an eye-catching oval-shaped oculus is also being constructed within The Star Grand’s porte cochere.

This stunning oculus centrepiece will spill sunshine over a subtropical water feature, welcoming guests into the expansive five-star hotel’s lobby entrance from late 2022.

With a diameter of 21.5 metres north to south, the oculus will bring bright natural light to William Street and the entertainment and luxury retails floors.

Multiplex Project Director Dayne May said that building over William Street was complex as it is the main loading zone servicing the 10 cranes operating on site.

“A large portion of material deliveries are brought onto site via William Street – which is still currently closed to the public,” Mr May said.

“At the moment, we are managing material deliveries and the installation of large steel fabricated elements on William Street at the same time.”

The large red structural steel elements currently seen on site are manufactured by Beenleigh Steel Fabrications, a local Southeast Queensland business.

Beenleigh Steel Fabrications is just one of the many local suppliers working on the project.
